Choosing an Eye Doctor – Ophthalmologist or Optometrist?

Here at Optics&EYECARE in Ashburn, we want you to make an informed decision about your eye care, and one of the biggest questions most people have is whether they should choose an optometrist or an ophthalmologist as their primary eye doctor.

CHOOSING AN OPTOMETRIST FOR YOUR OPHTHALMOLOGY NEEDS

An optometrist is an individual that attended medical school and then went on to get a doctorate in optometry. Optometrists perform routine eye health exams that test the overall health of your eye and your visual acuity, which meets most individuals’ ophthalmology needs.

Here at Optics&EYECARE, we perform a variety of eye health and diagnostic services, including pediatric and adult eye examinations, eye exams for contact lenses and glasses, and LASIK refractive surgery consultation and co-management services.

Our comprehensive eye health examinations include testing for glaucoma, cataracts, AMD, and diabetic eye diseases. We also offer computer and sports vision services as well as Ortho-k for individuals that do not want to wear corrective lenses during the day.

CHOOSING AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST

An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor that is also an MD. Ophthalmologists perform all the same functions as optometrists, including providing prescriptions for contact lenses and eyeglasses, and they perform eye surgeries. When you come into our office for an eye exam that includes a LASIK refractive surgery consultation, our eye doctor will thoroughly examine your eyes and map your cornea in order to determine if LASIK surgery would improve your visual acuity.

If we determine that LASIK refractive surgery would be beneficial for you, our optometrist, Seema Mohanan, O.D., will refer you to an ophthalmologist for your surgery. After your surgery, you will be scheduled for several follow-up eye examinations at our eye clinic to make sure your corneal flap is healing correctly, and you are not experiencing any complications.

To schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye health examination, call our Ashburn eye clinic at 703-687-4719.
